Today's Monarchies

We call it Constitutional Monarchy, that is, the powers of the ruler are restricted to those granted under the constitution and laws of the nation. This also mean having a King or Emperor without any real ruling powers.

Had watched a little of today's episode of "Princess Hours" (宫-野蛮王妃) on Channel U over dinner earlier. There was an informal discussion about Constitutional Monarchy whereby one of the Princes commented that today's (constitutional) monarchy is just an expensive puppet to entertain the country's subjects (citizens). They hold no ruling powers and are just using public money to show off their luxurious lifestyle.

How true.

The King then explained that, this is the reason why monarchies all over the world are trying to "come closer" to their subjects instead of reigning over and above them. The Monarch family serves as a focal point for uniting the country's people, as well as guardians of past traditions (of having a "supreme leader" above the people).

I just find the discussion in the show interesting. Both sides brought up valid points. However, I would tend to favour the Prince's argument. It is really quite redundant to use public money to finance a (royal) family just because they were once all-mighty and still is "above" the people. I wonder how do the current monarchs in the world feel about being an "expensive puppet" to their people. Good money and life maybe, but still a puppet. Would that be your choice of lifestyle?

So, were you a "puppet" in your life? Or are you one now?
