'Multi-tasking' or simply 'Distracted'?

By right the word 'multi-tasking' is a compliment. It tells us that someone can perform several tasks concurrently. However, how much does it tell us about the quality and productivity of the work done?

We may be watching the TV, reading the papers and munching our dinners. Or maybe for my case, I can be marking my books, watching TV, conversing with my wife, and eating dinner at the same time. Is that a skill, a feat or simply poor management of self and time?

Just how productive and focus can we be when we are multi-tasking? Gender differences aside, can anyone really declare proudly that he/she is a good multi-tasker? Let's be honest, we all know the answers. We can't really give in our 100% attention and focus to any one task in such situations? It'll be 20% here, 40% there and another 40% over there. And don't forget about the time taken to complete all these tasks. Will we necessarily make use of a shorter time to complete these tasks? Even so, are you 100% 'in' to that task?

I'm sure that guy on the right is not comfortable and he would definitely take a longer time (at least he needs to put down his laptop before he can wipe his arse) and things may 'hang' halfway due to a possible momentary lapse of concentration.

Don't multi-task unnecessarily. Stay focused and prioritise your tasks. I don't think one can be considered a professional if he/she multi-tasks too much. That can mean poor time management and prioritising skills.
