Songs, dance, colours and that's it.

The story in brief:
2 girls from 'sob' backgrounds get together to perform on the getai stage as the Papaya Sisters. Big Papaya was driven out of her home because her mum disapproves of her 'career' while Small Papaya is an orphan who lived with his aunt whom used to be a getai singer and her son, a deaf mute. Under her tutelage, both girls soon became a hit in the getai arena.

Fame has a price. They soon meet their nemesis in the form of rival getai performers, the Durian Sisters. A competition ensued and the losers shall retire from the getai scene forever. Yup, you can guess who won in the end.

The verdict:
Predictable plot, but I must say it is a good shot at depicting the getai scene in Singapore, especially the hardship and tears behind the glamour on stage. Lots of hokkien numbers were belt out in this movie and I especially like the main theme song "A half to each" (especially in the unplugged version) It is also interesting to have Royston Tan himself to be the narrator, something which he performed surprisingly well in it.

On the flip side, there are lots of 'out of point' moments such as bras that can shoot out lasers or a getai goddess that can cast spells. Not to mention that some parts in the story are too draggy too.

Nonetheless, this movie is worth the weekday night movie ticket. If you have the patience, waiting for the DVD is fine. Don't be swayed by all these hypes.

P/S: Royston Tan's brother is my JC classmate leh... ;p
