Besides mobile phones, the PSP seems to be the next inseparable accessory of Singaporeans. I'm sure foreigners who are in town would be amused by how 'wired-up' Singaporeans are. Be it on standing or sitting down on public buses / trains, moving around shopping malls or even in the midst of a meal, it is a common sight to see people glued to their PSP.
Are they so cheap now that everybody can afford it? Even if it is, what's the rationale for being so occupied (physically and mentally) even when one is on the move? Do those extra minutes or time spent not socialising with other human beings so unbearable that one must fish out their gadgets and start pumping their fingers? Does the sound of all things going on around us so unpleasant that one must choose to shut themselves out of the 'real' world by plugging their ears onto these devices or worse, to 'share' it out with your fellow commuters by playing them loud.
During my JC days, I did have the habit of plugging into my radio transmitter while on the bus so that I would not doze off and miss my stop. However, a fellow platoon mate from my army days told me this that made me 'kicked' the habit. He said, "Learn to appreciate the sounds (of nature) around you or you will regret it someday." He has a hearing impairment in one of his ears and thus often dissuades us from plugging our ears into those devices. Although I do not know what is the cause of his disability, but there is definitely nothing wrong with those words of wisdom.
Perhaps one day, playing the PSP would be another excuse for one to not give up their seats on the public transport. Or has it already happened? ;)
