With so much hype and fanfare going on for the Beijing Olympics, it is as if the whole world is organising their first ever Olympics. Or that it is as if North Korea is the host nation. I mean the whole event is so... 'big deal'!Come 2010, it will be Singapore's turn to host an inaugural event - the Youth Olympics Games (YOG). Definitely the whole world will have their eyes on us - the eyesore of western civilisation, the unbelieveable success story of a breakaway colonial state.
Knowing how our Government does things, the YOG will definitely not fall too far back from the standards set by the Chinese government two days ago. So, will we be seeing Tao Li swimming in mid-air to pass the holy Olympic torch? Or will we have our mystical creature mascot, the merlion come to life, breathing flames onto the inaugural YOG torch? Will Mr S R Nathan be the one declaring the opening of the games or will it be Mr Lee Kuan Yew? Will Mas Selamat be caught by then?
Perhaps the YOG is still quite faraway. The Singtel Grand Prix will be the focal point this year. How is the Republic going to handle this world first major night motoring event?
